the food is mediocre

Great restaurant. The good: food was excellent, you don't need a knife to cut the prime rib, service was great, they held our reservation an extra half hour. The bad: there was confusion over who our server was so we kind of sat for a bit before having our drink orders taken, 2 of the steaks were under done, the seating is a bit crowded. Over all great eats and good atmosphere.

Staff is super friendly and helpful. Surprisingly good mojitos. (These plus margaritas and a bunch of martinis are $5, all the time) Order a nutty irishman with dessert. That is all.
(4)Steve R.
To me this place is interesting and shocking at the same time. You wouldn't think it would be what it is from the outside. Very nice atmosphere. To sum it up, this place is all about SIMPLICITY. Everything is straight to the point and the food is exactly that...great but simple. The staff moves around like GHOST! They just pop up and disappear. Like I was on an old fancy ship that went down in the Bermuda Triangle and was having dinner on it! Lol....weird but great experience...a little pricey? Yeah but, it's not a la carte and you get nice sides with your meal, so that helps...and also the location is kinda crappy depending on were you live. Other than that, totally recommend this place

This place was good if you are looking for a white demographic hole in the wall steakhouse with above average prices. The waitress was attentive. The food was ok. Bartender was a drunk.

I moved here in July 2011 and have drivin by this place several times. from the outside i was kinda discouraged to go in. However after shopping one day i decided to take the plunge. OMG what a pleasent surprise. At the front door i was greeted by the owner like i was family. it felt like he truely appreaciated my business. Once i was sat down within a min someone came and filled my water glass. About 2 min later my server came to me and offered me drinks, told me about the specials of the day. I ordered prime rib which was cooked to perfection , a huge bake potatoe was offered with that. As a appitizer i ordered french onion soup which came out very hot and fresh. It was soooo tasty i coulod not eat the entire crock of it. MY dinner salad was full of fresh greens like it was just prepared for me. The waitress, the water guy all kept my glasses topped off without me even having to ask. I will definately come back here when i want another truely amazing meal.

If you're craving a good steak, this place will hit the spot. Some friends and I decided to check the "Barn" out on the spur of the moment and left full and happy. While you're waiting, the waiter brings out these cracker-like bread sticks and cheese to tide you over. We had the teriyaki bites, a tender and tasty appetizer that was enough for a few people to share. I had the beef medallion shish kebabs that come with sauteed mushrooms, onions, and tomatoes on a bed of rice pilaf. (Delicious!) And that still comes with 2 more side choices and warm bread. The food is definitely worth spending your money on but it is pricey so be prepared to throw down some loot.

My wife and I went to The Barn this past Friday night. We have been there a few times this year. Not many restaurants have the owner meet you when you walk in, but this one does. They genuinely appreciate your business and want you to come back. If you go on a weekend, expect it to be crowded, thats a good sign! Expect the staff to be excited and passionate about helping and waiting on you. Michael was our server on our last visit and he was excellent, he actually waited while I cut into my prime rib to make sure it was exactly as ordered, and it was. Your water and beverage of choice never goes empty and there is a good chance you will be taking some food home with you because of the large portions. It's not cheap, expect to spend around $30 per person for your meal, it's worth it! The terriaky steak bites are a great appetizer! Ed will come around and check on you, hes a nice man that likes to visit, and sell you on the desserts, enjoy the atmosphere, it is loud and friendly. If you are going out to be in a nice quiet environment, this probably isn't it, this restaurant has its own energy, it's like having dinner with a really large family that you didn't know you had. It is actually addicting! It is an event that I l look forward to, much like when I was a kid and we were planning a trip to Busch Gardens!

Date night. My husband and I ate here last night. The food was great. Customer service was 5 star. Live music. I really enjoyed my date night. I had the broiled seafood platter my hubby had the fried seafood platter. We both enjoyed our meals and we have added this location to our date night rotation. SN...I'm eating leftover from my meal and it's still good. Keep up the good work. The only down side is the place seems a little small.

Had a lovely dinner here with my husband. Our server was attentive, the manager checked with us, which is always nice, the food was delicious! Best prime rib I've had in a while, even though it was huge. I warmed it over for lunch the next day and it was still good! We'll be going back soon.

Tonight was my fourth visit to Aberdeen Barn and it couldn't have been much better. The steaks are terrific, but that's not anything new. The salad and appetizers are top-notch. The grouper was literally covered with lump crab. No room for dessert tonight. If there were downsides, service was a little slow, and it was packed. That's a good sign. The bread served with dinner is about as generic as one could ask for. If not for that they would get five stars.

This is seriously the best steak place/date restaurant in town. Conveniently located off of 64 in the heart of Hampton Roads, Aberdeen Barn is situated in a red.... Well, barn on Northampton Boulevard. But don't let the exterior fool you - this place has top notch food, and you can tell from the moment that you walk in that every staff member knows what they're doing. First of all, my SO and I have been twice, and both times we were treated with the utmost professionalism. These people understand that their restaurant is high end, and because of that they treat you very well. The guy that I think is the owner was seen walking around both times we were there to greet all of the customers and even talk about his favorite dishes with them. Nothing intrusive - just professional friendliness. In terms of the staff, they are all EXTREMELY knowledgeable in regards to all aspects of their menu. But the best part of this place is the food. Oh my God.... That filet mignon... I can't even put into words how tasty it is! They also serve great lobster tail. The most recent time I went I decided to try a special they had for crab Mac and cheese. I'm not going to lie- it was too spicy for me, but besides that it was seriously some of the best Mac and cheese I've ever had. In terms of the atmosphere it is very classic, yet nice. They have a classical guitar player that I'm assuming is apart of their full time staff, and he is very good at what he does. There is a sports bar situated in this restaurant, as well, and although I've never been to it it seems to look nice. Lastly, their dessert is to DIE for. Seriously, folks: their red velvet cake puts me in a food coma. Fun fact I learned on my last visit : their display dessert tray contains real cake slices- not plastic faux pieces like most places. It's refrigerated and changed regularly, and now I know why I thought that everything on there looked good enough to eat! Anyone who goes here and doesn't purchase dessert after looking at that edible dessert tray has got to be a mad man. Oh, and speaking of Mad man: I read a few reviews below before writing mine, and LOL at that guy named Brian! "Aerosol Cheez Whiz"? Sorry, but any idiot who's ever had cheese in their entire life knows that the cheese they serve you at Aberdeen is NOT Cheez Whiz! Heck, one of the reasons we even went to Aberdeen the most recent time was because my SO loved that cup of cheese they gave him so much. But anyways, I don't know what exactly I expected out of a review from a guy so offended by being served Cracker breadsticks that he posted a picture of them like it was some sort of insult, or seemed offended by the classical guitar player strumming "Ring Of Fire", but I wanted to give this guy a shout out to say thanks for the laughs! Anyways... This place really Is special, and is now my go-to "treat" restaurant in Hampton Roads. I'm not sure how long it's been around for (I'm going to guess a long time), but I hope it it stays around forever so I can experience this place for many more years to come.
(5)Darren H.
Came here on a recommendation from the hotel. Great steak, great service and good atmosphere. Steak was done to perfection. A bit on the pricey side but a solid choice for steak (and seafood)
(4)Brian G.
Horrible place!!! I cannot believe this place is even in business. Lance crackers and canned cheese on the table. Salad dressing should NOT come in a plastic tiny cup and should not be cheap and nasty when you're paying $50 to $70 per plate, are you out of your freaking mind???? No manager visits to our table or any table around us. Smells horrible, glade plug ins in plain sight to cover up something. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE, save your money, the outback is a much much much better alternative, it blows them away. I wish we walked away when the salads came, always go with your gut feeling, my gut was right for sure that horrible night. Horrible horrible place!!!
(1)Sarou C.
Service- phenomenal!! Food- we sat down and they served us bread- it was kinda small but it it nice and warm. They had cheese spread to go with it. Side salads were good- cold and fresh. I ordered the NY strip with mashed potatoes and veggie medley. It was so good! Okay- I could've done without the taters but the steak was the star on the plate. It had that grilled taste- seasoned very well- sitting in juices. I tore it up! My fiance ordered the prime rib and it was so tender!! I'm drooling just thinking about last nights dinner. For dessert we had the cheesecake with strawberry topping. Yummm to the O! My future father in law was with us during dinner. He said it was better than Ruths Chris. I've personally never been there before but I've heard alot of great things about it. I'm sure that's a big compliment to Aberdeens :) Happy eating yall!

Ahem, I am a MEAT LOVER. Although I have been to the AB severallllllllll times, this is my first time writing a review on them. Now, hear me when I say EVERY TIME I have been here, the FOOD & the SERVICE have all been TOP NOTCH. Most recently, my family decided to do an UN-traditional Christmas Dinner and go out to eat. I was having a very hard time locating a place that wasn't a Chinese Buffet and my co-worker suggested the AB. I did some digging and found out that the AB was having a Christmas Dinner Buffet!!!!!!!!!! So I made a reservation and my family and I fell up in here for Christmas. This place was PACKEDDDDDDDDDD to the GILLS. I'm so glad we made a reservation. We were seated IMMEDIATELY. Seating was a little tight as the restaurant was trying to accommodate large(r) parties. It was still no problem. As always, ambiance was amazing. Dim and cozy. Lots of wait staff hustling and bustling behind the scenes that I could see. The buffet was set up in a room in the back. We had the pleasure of feasting on fresh garden salad with ALL the fixins (not fixings, but fixins) red skinned mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, mixed veggies, FRIED BUTTERFLY SHRIMP (ya girl is a shrimp lover!) she crab soup (mmmmmmmh) baked salmon (AMAZINGGGG) fresh carved ham, PRIME RIB (melt in your mouth) LAMB (Mary's Lamb was SOOOO GOOD) steamed shrimp, oysters on a half shell and a delicious assortment of desserts. Our waiter was Trevor. A nice young man from Idaho or Iowa (one of those I states) He was such a good waiter. Made sure that our water glasses stayed full and he kept us laughing throughout the night. Absolutely everything that I had (which was everything) was DELICIOUSSSSSSSSSS. No complaints, everything was lovely!!! I cannot wait to go back for another visit!
(5)Dana M.
Highly overpriced for the quality of food. Lump crab & filet mignon was good though the steak was a bit over cooked. Oysters were yummy. Service was mediocre.
(3)Adrey S.
Excellent food, wine and dessert! Expensive but worth it for a nice occasion. Highly recommend the blackened prime rib and cowboy cut delmonico. Daughter had the chicken Alfredo (she's picky and loved it!), nephew enjoyed the rock fish and his wife loved the stuffed grouper. Save a "little" room for the largest piece of chocolate cake ever or the tuxedo. Delicious! My husband and I have eaten at multiple high end steak houses and agree that the quality of food was definitely one of the best. Will stop in again on our next visit to Norfolk. Only recommendation was to have the musician turn down the sound a little so that we could enjoy our conversation better.
(4)Bill K.
Very expensive for what you get. Presentation for the price was very mediocre, steak was good but no Wow factor. A little disappointed based on previous reviews. Even side dishes didn't wow me at all.
(3)Christine T.
This place is fantastic and it ain't cheap, but like the old saying goes "You get what you pay for." My mother took me here for my birthday this past Saturday. I usually will try to save food on my plate to take home so I can make room for dessert... um, I couldn't stop eating what was on my plate. Never had much to say in conversation, either, because I was too focused on the food. Didn't even want to stop and take a pic of my fried fisherman's platter ... because I wanted to eat it and not stop eating it. Everything on my plate was fresh and cooked with expertise. Same for my mother's plate (she got the Ultimate Seafood Platter). The staff was exceptionally attentive and easy going at the same time, respectful and kind (they were all young men, too, which was interesting). I noticed something else interesting about the other patrons. They were all significantly older people. I don't know if I would attribute that to them having a more evolved palate because they grew up eating home cooked food and therefore know good food when they taste it or because they are retired and have more discretionary income - lol. Whatever the reason, the crowd was definitely older and seasoned. It seems like a family owned place. I told my mother that I felt like I was sitting in a mafia owned restaurant out of "Goodfellas" (lol) and she agreed. That's what the decor is like: dim, but pleasant and broody. I expected to turn around any moment and see a bunch of well dressed, well groomed older men sitting in the corner, eating their fine dinners and cutting deals! Considering how poor many South Hampton Roads restaurants are, this one is a true gem and worth patronizing. The food was absolutely fantastic. A winner in every sense of the word! Another nice thing to see: the manager/owner of the restaurant came out to ask guests if everything was good and thanked them for dining there. Old time service if ever there was a thing -- a lost art-form.

Meal was so so overall. Started with raw oysters. They were good. Very good priced didn't get sick. Then came mussels horrible. They were dry had some seasoning but it was on the shell???? Then came the salads. Got the Greek salad nothing to complain about very good. I got the 10oz delmonte. Ordered medium rare came medium but was very good. Girlfriend got scallops and small sirloin. Both were good. Bill ended up being over 150.00. Food was good but could eat the same somewhere else.
(3)Kim K.
The place is probably AWESOME if you love steak and seafood. As a vegetarian, they did offer a couple of pasta dishes and I selected the cheese ravioli. It was very good, a little pricey for 6 ravioli, but very good. They have wonderful bread that arrives hot out of the oven and its DELISH!!!! My salad was fresh and crisp and the iced tea was freshly brewed too. They have a nice dessert selection but very pricey as well. The place was super packed and you could barely even move though the dining room to get out, made me feel vey closed in. It was very hot in there and once the air kicked on it was much better. I would suggest highly to anyone who eats meat, but not very veggie friendly. .

The service is outstanding from the host to the waitstaff to the bussers. The decor is nice and the low level of chatter from the other patrons adds to the ambiance, like patina on brass. The steak was cooked perfectly rare as ordered each time I've been there. The only thing I didn't care for was the wrapped crackers on the tables, and that they bring you sauces in plastic snap lid containers like a burger joint would. I went on Christmas and they had a brunch that was very nice. Small selection, but good quality items. Desserts weren't very good, but I seldom do them anyway. They had lamb, prime rib, oysters on half shells. All was same quality as menu items. I'll be back. It was great to find a restaurant open on Christmas too and I was lucky to not have a reservation and get in, they were quite busy but the service never suffered.
(4)Kurt K.
SAVE YOUR MONEY!!! The good: service was outstanding! Very fast and friendly. Warm bread for starters. The bad: the food is lack luster. I got a Caesar salad and it was literally 3 leaves of lettuce. The ugly: hope you got some savings to spend on it. Very high priced. Almost over the top. Not worth the money. Oh and the mints.... Key lime flavor. Communists!!
(2)Regina H.
The restaurant is clean. You are greeted promptly and seated.quickly. The scenery is barn chic. Beautiful wooden trim and ceiling with chandeliers throughout the dining area. The food was okay. The service was good.I was expecting much more but meh! The restaurant owner greeted us upon entry and asked us how we enjoyed our meal and the service. I wish the food was better because I really like the management staff. The tables on both side of us REALLY enjoyed their cocktails and wine. They probably have a very different review of their evening experience. I wish the restaurant continued success because their management staff tries hard to please. I would not drop in again but I know this location has a dedicated following.
(3)Kimber L.
Service was friendly and efficient. Our food was good. I thought it would be different as I've heard so many rave about it but it was just okay.
(3)Ron C.
Super expensive food! Everything is over $50. It doesn't have that steakhouse feel. On the outside our looks inviting but inside it looks like Dracula lives there. Appetizers are pretzel sticks and cheese dip from the dollar store.
(1)Kennard B.
Great steak! This was my first time visiting but I decided to try it based on some friends recommendations. It did not dissapoint. The staff was friendly and accomodating. Service was good considering it was a packed house but our server made sure to check with us every so often. The food was excellent! I ordered the porterhouse and my wife the delmonico. Both were very flavorful and moist. The drinks were good and strong. I got the orange creamsicle cake to go which was also delicious. Can't wait to come back to this place. Try it if you haven't already
(4)Steve W.
My wife and I went there for our 11th wedding anniversary at the recommendation of my sister and everything was great! We sat at a cozy table for two in the bar, right next to a Christmas tree decorated for Thanksgiving, with the fireplace glowing warmly behind it. Since it was Sunday, NFL football was on 3 different TVs. The ambience was perfectly suited for our day. Our waitress brought hot fresh bread. We then ordered the bacon wrapped scallops appetizer, which was wonderful, and she had the steak oscar with sides of a baked potato and a salad while I had fried shrimp and oysters with sides of broccoli and fries. The oysters were fried perfectly and were served in their shell. The broccoli was served piping hot with a dipping sauce. The wait staff was very attentive, refilling our water by the time it was only half empty. All in all, it was a great choice for us, and we will definitely return! PS - we had a coupon from a local City of Suffolk mailer that was good for saving $15 on any two entrees, and it worked for the lunch menu and dinner menu.
(5)Johnny A.
I was in town overnight for work. They put me up in the hotel down the street. Decided to check the place out for dinner. Nice southern styled ambience. The people were friendly. The hostess could've smiled and been a little nicer but I guess being cute means she can get away with not being cordial. Not. My server was another cute girl that was very friendly and quick w the order. I ordered the fried oysters and a medium rare cowboy rib eye. It was perfect. Other than the broad up front w the attitude the place is awesome. Definitely recommend this place for donner.
(4)Nancy S.
LOVE this restaurant. This is my family's special event place. The food is always amazing, the service is above reproach, and we've been eaiting here for years. We're greeted like family each time we return. We love the lobster tails as well as the filet mignon.
(5)Rikki B.
Had a wonderful date night here! It's a lovely environment, great people, and delicious food!! We will def be back!! Well worth everything!
(5)Pam K.
Went to dinner with friends, and had a great dining experience. Everyone was friendly and accommodating. Beautifully decorated. Great guitarist! We were seated fairly close to the guitarist, and we could still carry on a decent conversation. Three of us had the prime rib and one of us had the Delmonico. Everything was absolutely delicious. It was a little more than what we typically spend, but well worth it. We also used a coupon for $15 off of two entrees. Our server, Jerry, was the best. Love this place, and will be back!
(5)Joseph P.
This is a good place with just enough flaws to keep it from being great and a couple flaws that make me not want to come back or recommend it to others. The menu selection is perfect with prime cuts of meat, lobster, and fresh seafood, but my steak had a LOT of inedible gristle and one of my co-worker's fish was very overcooked. The service was amazing and the owner is extremely proud of his food and desserts. You don't see that everywhere and it was refreshing to see someone beam with that much pride. Unfortunately, the owner's zeal goes a step too far as he seemed to guilt our dinner party into buying a dessert. When no one took him up on the offer, he went around the table and asked each person, individually, if they were sure they couldn't purchase something. This made an entire group of fairly thick skinned guys feel pretty uncomfortable. All of this could potentially be excusable if it wasn't for the price. A "great bargain" makes shameless up-selling and less-than-perfect cuts of meat seem acceptable, but at $35-$50 a steak, I've had better food, better execution in the kitchen, and less pushy owners. I'm giving them 3 stars but I also think they are just a couple tiny tweaks from being one of the best steakhouse around.
(3)Esmi A.
My husband and I came here for dinner yesterday. Our waiter was really nice. That probably would have only been the good thing about this restaurant. For appetizer we got fried oysters, they were really good. Bread was delicious Dinner, well that takes 1 star. My husband got the cowboy steak. He loves steak, but for the first time ever he couldn't even take two bites. He spit the first bite out. I didn't even bother trying it. Our waiter notice that he didn't like it so he offered to bring him another steak. He got the filet instead. It was decent. I got the fried crab cake and fish for dinner. It came with whole head of broccoli and cole slaw. I enjoyed the crab cake n broccoli. I forced myself to eat the fish because I was already grossed out from the salad that came with our dinner. The salad still had dirt in it. I personally wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone. And I don't see myself coming back here ever again.
(2)Casey G.
I'm not sure why we haven't dined here before?! We brought my dad and my grandmother who were in town last week, and all four of us raved about the place. You are definitely transported back in time with décor, but the food was AMAZING! We started with the steamed clams in a cream sauce which had excellent flavor, but 4 out of the 12 clams were mysteriously missing, and must have escaped from their shells. We told our waiter, who apologetically brought out 3 (not sure why it wasn't 4) extra clams. The cream sauce was soooo good that we were dipping our dinner bread, as well as our breadsticks into it after we had polished off the clams. All four of us ordered Delmonico steaks, and we were all thoroughly pleased. The added sautéed mushrooms and onions were perfectly cooked, and very flavorful. The steaks were out of this world and were quite possibly the best we've ever had. We can't wait to go back!

It has been awhile since my last visit to Aberdeen Barn, I'm happy to say it's the same.....GREAT! Located on NorthHampton Blvd for the past 20 years, Aberdeen is an institution. This is one of the best places in the area up get a steak at a good price. Most cuts are below $40 and you'll probably take done of it home. The service is great and the dining room is fabulous. Often times, there is live entertainment. On this night, there was a gentleman playing Spanish guitar, very romantic. Best of all, it was Thursday night and I got 20% off a bottle of wine. The only thing better is if I came on Monday or Wednesday for 40% off .......note to self.
(5)Cindy H.
we made reservations for 26. Service was really good. The food was great! Steaks were awesome. No one in the whole party complained about anything!
(4)Jillian G.
Seriously the worst steak of my life. I got a 7oz filet and my boyfriend got the 10oz ribeye. The quality of the cut was not impressive at all. When paying $40+ a steak, I expect a good cut. My filet the burned on the outside, although cooked correctly (medium rare). The steak had no flavor, other than the burned exterior of the steak. My boyfriend's steak was cooked perfectly but was not impressed with the flavor. Honestly the best part of the meal was everything other than the steak.. Not to mention, the inside of the place looks like something out of a cult movie. Weird place. Not worth the marked up prices, at all. Maybe get the fish? Who's knows. Not going back.

My husband , two children and I made reservations to dine with the restaurant on Christmas Day. We usually cook for the holidays , Yet decided to dine out this year(2014). My husband is fresh home from deployment, and I desired to spend more time enjoying his company, then us to cook a large meal. Considering we have dined here previously , we felt we were in for a treat! Instead the food was awful, we would have done better dining at Golden Corral at 75% less the cost. The server was inattentive, yet at the end of the experience wrote in on our check a $31 tip! I notified the restaurant of our experience, yet received no response. We essentially wasted $190 on subpar food and bad service. We were very disappointed ! A total bill for over $218... See no reason to dine there again-
(1)Johnny W.
Yes, indeed! What a great meal, atmosphere and staff. The service was excellent, the manager made himself visible the whole time we were there, coming by and making sure everyone's meals and visit were excellent. Jerry one of our waiters was great also, such nice person, great waiter, great job! The food was outstanding to say the least, absolutely delicious. We had such a great visit and meal here. Why wouldn't we come back!
(4)Brian L.
It was nice. I had lunch here. I started with the she crab soup which was delicious, but a little lukewarm. The lobster tail was absolutely spectacular and a little salty. The steak was good. The potatoes were a little disappointing, but still overall very good. Tequila, our waitress was great--knowledgeable, professional, and courteous. Great place. Everyone should try it at least once.
(4)Adriana B.
I came here with my husband with other friend couples for valentines day. They went on and on about how this was the best Steak house in Va. Beach. When we saw the menu, we did not know how high the prices were as this was obviously our first time there. But hey! it was valentines and a night out for a very expensive dinner was fine. It was a limited menu too. Once we tried our super expensive food, my husband and I could not agree on how much it sucked. After we left. we agreed we wouldn't let friends pick our eating place and we definitely won't spend on $50 steak plates (each) that were nowhere near delicious. Don't waste your money here on steak. Texas Road house is far better. I don't care what anyone says. And you get more options and delicious appetizers plus drinks with just $50 alone.

I've heard wonderful things about this place, so I was excited that a nursing meeting was being held at the Aberdeen Barn. When I first walked in, I was instantly greeted by a host, who walked me the banquet room in the back of the restaurant. I got to walk in front of the kitchen, which smelled delicious. A whole room was dedicated for our meeting, and there were other seating areas as well. However, I think they closed the restaurant off for us (which was from 6pm-8pm). Upon sitting down, a waitress got my drink order. I liked how there were cheese and breadstick crackers to munch on while waiting for our food. We each had a three-course meal that night. Our salads came out first, and was very delicious and large. I liked their ranch dressing, which was the perfect amount of creaminess. Bread was also brought out with our food, which was just the perfect amount of crunch and complimented with butter. For our entries, we were given the choices of salmon, flatiron steak, and chicken kabobs. I chose the salmon, which also came with veggies and mashed potatoes. The salmon was cooked very well, and flaked off nicely when cutting off pieces to eat. I liked the mashed potatoes. The veggies were okay, but tasted like they were previously frozen. For dessert, the staff kind of just handed out three different types of dessert. I had the lemon cake, which I absolutely loved! I had a great experience at this restaurant and would not mind coming again!
(4)Bobby W.
I thought the atmosphere was great and the service was good but the food I ordered wasn't. I had their seafood platter and I wish I hadn't ordered it because it wasn't worth the money I paid for it. I think they thought I was stupid and didn't know what good food really was because the scallops were as thin as a quarter and the rest of the food was equally disappointing. Needless to say I will Never Eat There Again in LIFE!
(1)Leland L.
Food is amazing, Service is top notch. Decor is old and dated and looks like your grandma decorated the place 30 yrs ago. Very classy, not a kid place. Perfect place for a quiet romantic dinner, or small gathering. Our food was excellent, our server was excellent. Our only issue was that the waiter for the table near us decided that he needed to be in a conversation with that table the whole night.. We couldn't even talk because their conversation was loud and we felt like when we spoke we were interrupting their conversation. The waiter was still standing at the table talking when we left.

This is a tough review to write because after our trip to AB last night, I cannot find anything that was "wrong" but nothing that really impressed me either. So, I gotta go with A-OK. My wife and I had a rare night without the boys and decided on give Aberdeen Barn a try. We had a reservation but arrived a bit early. We were seated right away, however. Once seated, we were told they had a "limited menu", presumably because of the Valentine's Day weekend. I didn't realize V-Day has extended beyond one day but apparently it has. The limited menu was a little disappointing but we stuck around. My wife ordered a petite filet and I went with the delmonico. The salad was fresh and very tasty but the bread they brought was just kinda meh. It wasn't bad, as it was hot and fresh but just had no flavor. I can't quite figure out what was missing. As for the steaks, the filet was good. It was a bit undercooked but it was still a good steak. The delmonico was average. I ate the whole thing, mind you, but it didn't blow me away. The garlic mashed potatoes (your only choice on the limited menu) were good, as were the veggies. Again, the food wasn't bad but it wasn't impressive. We ordered dessert to go, a chocolate cake and baklava. Much like the meal, it was mixed as the cake was quite good but the baklava was average. The service was good enough. Our server was not overly attentive nor was she negligent in her duties. A-OK again. Taken together, the experience was worthy of three stars though we probably won't go back. The benchmark for a steakhouse is to compare the steak to what I can grill at home. If I can grill a steak as good or better than the one served to me, why go back? And I can say that I grill a better steak than Aberdeen Barn, at least compared to what we had. So, next time I'll either go the extra mile and hit Ruth's Chris or grill at the house.

Walking into the Aberdeen barn you are greeted very pleasantly by all of the staff. The whole experience as far as customer service goes was absolutely great! The food vs the prices wasn't that great at all. I got the ultimate broiled seafood platter which I would rate a 7 on taste alone but for almost $40 def not worth it. My wife got the ny strip which was prob 1/4 fat and $4 to add onions and mushrooms to it. I would rate the steak a 6 out of 10. Two things that were amazing and priced ok were the she crab soup and the broiled oyster rockafella. Portions of everything were very decent. We also orange cream cake which was great.

My wife and I took our son there when we went down to tour the Culinary Institute. First of all, the look of the outside and having the name "Barn" in the restaurant name didn't fit with it being a relatively pricey place. Service was fabulous, courteous and not rushed. I had a chicken dish that was very good. My son had a steak that was decent, but I've had better for less than the $32 we spent. My wife had crab cakes that she had to send back because when she got the first forkful to her nose, it had the ammoniated-like smell of when seafood is a bit past-it. In retrospect, she said she shouldn't have ordered seafood on a Monday. She then ordered scallops that were decent but took a while. Would I go back? Probably not. There has to be a better value in Virginia beach.

This place gives me such mixed emotions. As a former fine-dining employee, I always enjoy coming to nice restaurants because I can truly appreciate the hard work it takes to make such a complicated and detailed process look effortless. In fine dining, it's all about the details. That's where my issues mostly lie. Lets start from the beginning. The atmosphere is very antiquated. I personally liked it, but it still kind-of says "Dads old moose lodge" to me. After sitting at the table, we ordered wine. Good selection. However, I did see someone pouring wine through parts of the foil, this will RUIN the flavor of wine. For a fine dining restaurant, this should never happen. If you are paying a pretty penny for that glass, you have grounds to be upset. We ordered a bottle to be safe. At our table, we were given lance cracker sticks and some cheesy substance that I can only describe as possibly coming from one of those Handi-Snack packs. If you know your patrons will be spending over a hundred dollars on their meal, you should provide something a bit more upscale, but I digress. Next I ordered a Caesar salad. Pretty standard and tasted fine. However, when the waitress attempted to put fresh pepper on it, she proceeded to put it all in my lap. Yikes. I had to push the grinder to the salad in order to get any pepper. Next course, She Crab Soup. I love this soup and have a pretty high expectation as to the quality of it. It wasn't bad, actually. However, when I asked for some sherry on it, a very common request, (Anyone who works with this dish should know), the waitress took my bowl and brought it back topped with sweet sherry. What a shock! I took everything in me to swallow my bite. Again, I flagged down our server and asked for a new bowl. As a customer, I should not have to educate my server on the dishes served at their place of employment. Yet, I did anyway. I requested a new bowl of soup and ask that a small portion of DRY sherry be provided on the side. After this, the soup tasted quite nice. From then on our meal was great. My cut of beef was excellent and almost made it worth the price. However, my experience made it seem as though Aberdeen Barn was like a little kid trying to walk in their fathers shoes. They need a bit more refining.

By far the best service, steak, and dessert I have had in a long time. It's a little pricey but you get what you pay for!!

So we came here for my birthday. The service was on par for what I would expect. The dress code however was not. For the price of the food I don't expect to see a guy in a sleeveless shirt and shower shoes. The steak my wife ordered was way way under cooked. She asked for medium and received very rare. They promptly corrected the steak. However for the 30 bucks per steak they were awfully fatty. I left half my prime rib on the plate being that it was mostly fat. Good flavor just not much bang for your buck. Decor seems odd. Like a clash of old school upscale and an attempt at homey mashup. The seats were old and in need of repair.
(3)Michael P.
Excellent steak. Cooked and seasoned perfectly. Friendly staff and resident classical guitar player rocked Hotel California. Decor takes you back to late 70's, early 80's.

I attended a neonatal nurses' dinner meeting here last week. The warm bread was delicious, but only when it was warm and fresh. The house salad was plain, and only ranch dressing was on the table. I should've asked for oil and vinegar. After eating pigs and cows earlier in the week, I decided to order fish. The grilled fish was seasoned, but salty, salty, salty. The side vegetables and mashed potatoes were mixed with too much butter. The fruit mousse dessert was not impressive either. Since our quarterly meetings are held at Aberdeen Barn, I'll be sure to choose steak next time since it's a steak place. The meeting was held in the banquet room with an awkward table arrangement; the tables were classroom style, but angled toward the middle of the room. One of my coworkers was already sitting in front, but another coworker was saving a seat for her friend. The first coworker and I moved to the back where were still seats available. We both had to strain our necks to pay attention to the speaker's presentation. It was super informative, and I wish I was able to take notes. By the way, the second coworker's friend never showed up! I'm also hoping the other nurses and future speakers would be friendlier, more welcoming and social.

Sadly I am disappointed. Went there this evening with high expectations but was disappointed in both food and service. Even though she tried very hard our waitress seemed to be here there and everywhere. my first order was scallops wrapped in bacon. It came out looking beautiful and delicious except it was prepared incorrectly. No big deal until I asked for it to be redone. When the second order came out the scallops and bacon were incredibly dry and almost inevitable. When the steaks came out mine appeared to be very well cooked but the steak for the other people in my group came out two grades higher than asked for. The fish that came out for one of the members of my group came out almost completely fried through and through. Not very appetizing. Considering that the steak cost $26 for an 8 ounce steak and the scallops with bacon were $12 for five little scallops I don't believe I'll be returning to this restaurant.

Excellent. All the way around. This was my first visit and definitely will not be my last. My husband and I decided to try after passing the location multiple times. I believe they may have had a shortened menu tonight in lieu of valentines day, but for us it was perfect. The only bad part of the night was that they had ran out of prime rib. Not surprising due to the amount of guests they had so I really wasn't upset at all. :) The service was phenomenal, I feel horrible not being able to remember the young gentleman's name. Attentive with a very nice, but not overbearing attitude. Now to the food. since they were out of prime rib my husband and I opted for the sirloin. Both were cooked to perfection. Bravo to the chef. Perfect amount of seasoning and extremely tender. By far one of the top 3 steaks I've ever had. My husband loved the mashed potatoes, but they were a little too salty for me. Nothing against the cooks I'm just picky about salt. I cannot wait to come back again. Thank you to the whole restaurant for an excellent experience!
(5)Kristin K.
As soon as I walked in the doors, I knew I loved it. This place is so deliciously retro - from the red vinyl booths and dark wood to the bread sticks on the table. I felt like Tony Soprano, Silvio, Paulie and Christopher were in a back room somewhere enjoying a huge steak and a bottle of red wine. Maybe that's because the fabulous classical guitar player was playing the Godfather theme song when we sat down... My husband and I came here to use a Virginian Pilot Deal, and we were not disappointed. The food was great and the portions huge. The best deal on the menu were the combo dinners. My husband ordered the NY Strip with broiled scallops, and I ordered the same only with fried shrimp - what a deal! By the time I finished the salad I was almost full. The steaks were cooked perfectly and the seafood was delicious. Both of us ate only half the steak, so we had a ton of leftovers for the next day. That, and we saw the waiters walking around with a huge dessert tray! Service was also great. It seems like every employee working greeted us with a smile and a hello. The restaurant manager and the owner (we think) came over several times to see if we were enjoying ourselves. Overall, a fun time and we will definitely be back!

Last night was my first visit of what will probably be many. I had the Prime Rib dinner w/she crab soup appetizer. The portion size was do generous my husband and I shared & still didn't complete it all. I know we have small appetites compared to most but to still have left overs? Wow!
(4)O. P.
This place was great. Friendly staff made us feel welcome from the moment we entered until our last step out of the door. Service was fantastic, our waiter was accommodating and never missed an opportunity to take care of anything we needed. The steaks were absolutely wonderful, and cooked exactly as we had requested. The mashed potatoes were exceptional as well. All together, far better than the newer trendy steakhouses around town. No matter how full you are, push the limit and get dessert. The choice will be tough because there are many to choose from but you won't be sorry you did. Our meal here equaled a great experience we had at Morton's in Chicago many years ago. World class steakhouse right here in Hampton Roads with a classical guitarist who made the evening all the better.
(5)Lori L.
The service here is excellent! My martini appeared seconds after I placed my drink order! And it was delicious! Our meals were out in record time and our waiter was very attentive. Entrees are large and if you want to have room for dessert you should skip the appetizers. Water glasses were always refilled quickly. The ambiance is a little 1980's and it's the only reason I didn't give it a 5th star. The place was clean and everyone is friendly. The individually wrapped breadsticks are a little odd for a place that charges $$$ but since it seems to be a family place there must be some history behind the breadsticks and cheese.

So my wife and I have been in Virginia Beach for years now and have heard a lot about Aberdeen. All good mind you. We have never gone because we are a military enlisted family and I'll be honest, I don't have a lot of money. Last night (It's not 0130 in the morning) I was craving steak and figured, why not... lets go spend some money. We arrived about 10 minutes before closing and they didn't seem to mind at all. The staff was great and willing to provide help for whatever we had questions for. My wife ordered French Onion soup to start and it was delicious. She got a Delmonico with a baked potato and I ordered the Prime Rib with garlic mashed reds. Wow! The Delmonico had amazing flavor and the Prime Rib was absolutely delicious. My mashed reds were really good as well. We ordered Lemon-cello cake to go and have not tried it yet so I can't boast about that yet. This was a very positive experience for us. The food was amazing and we have every intention on returning to try a different cut (I see a filet mignon in the future) and possibly a different desert. My only problem is that we waited this long to eat here!
(4)Terron D.
Absolutely one of the best steaks I've had in a while. Great service as well
(4)Christine J.
Very good experience, we had a great time! Made reservations by phone the night before. Arrived 10 minutes early and seated immediately. Decided against the appetizers because we had already planned to get dessert, which turned out to be an excellent choice! The service was outstanding, our server, Steven, was attentive, friendly, and all around great. We'll be asking specifically for his section next time. Dress varied from t-shirt and jeans (not sagging) to a little black dress, I recommend a collared shirt and khakis. An acoustic guitarist played the entire time at an appropriate volume and did a good job. Pre-meal bread tasted fresh, salads were decent, a good mix of greens and not totally iceberg like most other places. The balsamic dressing was average and so was the greek feta vinaigrette, however the steaks were freakin' perfect! My 18oz NY Strip was cooked exactly the way I asked and was very juicy and tender (I posted the NY Strip picture). I first chose a french red wine that I didn't care for and the waiter didn't even attempt to persuade me to keep it, he took it back right away and brought out his recommendation which was wonderful. We had the the Triple Swiss Chocolate Cake and it had a good amount of drizzled chocolate and whip cream with strawberries. Hooyaah gluttony!! And the bottles of wine are 30% off M-Th :D The total check was a little over $100. We had a great time and will definitely go back.

Business trip dinner. Escargot was amazing and maybe the best I've ever had. Guys I was with order rib eye and filet and they loved it. (2 steak snobs). The waitstaff (Dawn) was awesome and fun and the owner pleasant. Good solid old style steak/seafood joint. I got the stuffed flounder and it was amazing.

We had an opportunity to stop in one hungry evening. Upon entering the hostess leads you past a glass enclosure where the beef is stored ready for the grill. The dining area is very compact where the customers are seated. Gthe table is nicely set, with a white tablecloth under a sheet of plexiglass. The menu is the dream of science fiction writers. Steaks are priced as if the joint was in New York City. The meal was excellent. The steak was medium rare and the sides excellent, We passed on the upgrades the waiter kept pushing. 9 dollars for Mac and cheese with a little crab. Really! I can't co,plain, the steam was excellent, almost as good as my guest whips up. But She is a gourmet chef. If you want to impress your date, or have an insane desire to spend daddy's money, then go. For me not again

We came in for a very rare date w/o the kids. Our main goal was to find a restaurant in the Entertainment Book and I had heard some pretty good things about Aberdeen Barn's location in Williamsburg from my uncle. So, we headed here with our $16 off coupon... Our initial impression of the restaurant is...well, it's a bit sketchy on the outside in a sketchy area...but walk in and the warmth of the decor and the employees puts you instantly at ease. Even if the place was completely shoddy inside, the staff is RIDICULOUSLY GREAT! So hospitable...every single one of them.! Our server Michael was PHENOMENAL!!! AMAZING. He was definitely one of the best servers we have ever had. If you go, please ask for him...you won't be disappointed. We started off with the Chesapeake Bay Crabcake Bites with sweet chili sauce. They were great...piping hot and barely any filler. The chili sauce is the same kind you serve with fried spring rolls/lumpia & can find it in the Asian grocery stores. It was a really good pairing. The Hubs got Gus' Delmonico. It was grilled nicely and GINORMOUS. The Hubs had literally 3 bites left and couldn't finish off...probably because he ate a gazillion of the sesame sticks with the cheese dip that came before the appetizer as well as almost the entire loaf of the fresh bread that came with the salad. I got the Surf & Turf combo of the 14 oz. prime rib & fried shrimp. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and the prime rib was cooked EXACTLY to my desired doneness. It was a pretty decent prime rib, not the best, but definitely good. With all the warm service of the hosts & waitstaff, we were really impressed. It is loud in there, so it would definitely be ok to bring kids and still be able to enjoy the ambiance without feeling stressed out about making sure your kids behaved really, really well. Our kids have dined in a nearly empty Steinhilber's and received compliments from everyone from diners to staff, so we normally don't have problems in that arena. But, if you wanted to bring a toddler who would normally be out of place in a formal setting but does well in a casual setting...then you're A-OK. I was definitely overdressed in a t-shirt dress & gladiator heels. I saw people in shorts & tees, jeans & tees, etc. Food's pretty good but definitely a bit overpriced. Service gets 6 stars. Ask for Michael.
(4)Joseph K.
There are more than one reason this place has been around since 1966. Solid tasting food, unique atmosphere, and good service make this place a must visit restaurant here in Virginia beach. Deserves more than 4 star, but not quite 5.
(4)Toni T.
My fiance and I went here during Valentine's Day weekend. The decor is a bit outdated and the back room was realllllllly drafty (in addition to the cold temperatures that weekend). I know I shouldn't expect much more since it's a barn, but I'd like to be comfortable while I eat! I had to keep my coat on. The service was decent from the front of the house to the table. The food was really good - I had crab cakes and he had the delmonico. There was apparently a special menu for that weekend; I was hoping to try something from the full menu since it was my first time visiting. There was a specialty cocktail offered that night that was pretty tasty...too bad I can't remember the name of it! It was some kind of martini. I would perhaps visit again during the warmer months to try something from the full menu (provided the temperature of the barn isn't unbearable), but if I had to choose, I would prefer one of the grander steakhouses to this.
(3)Walter S.
Down a star since my last visit. Service was still fantastic. This time it was pretty noisy with a nearby Birthday group plus the live music. I can't blame the staff for that but the food was not quite as good which is something that can be controlled. The house salad had too much Iceburg, white chunks actually, but otherwise ok. The Delmonico had a little more waste parts than normal and not just fat. There was too much gristle also. Fish was great as was the baked potato and broccoli. Chocolate Cheesecake was sinful. We are still coming back. Even with the few issues I think it's one of the better restaurants around.
(4)Lewis G.
The food was delicious with lengthy to eat. Our waitress was very personable and right on the ball. I had prime rib which was so tender, it melted in your mouth. My husband chose a 20 oz steak which he only ate half. The portions are very generous. My only critique would be that they take your plates so quickly. We still had bread to eat and they cleared our small plates without asking. I would definitely go back.
(4)C J.
A+ for sure on effort, food and customer service. I was very satisfied with my meal and happy to see other customer enjoying their steak experience. I will return for another Prime Rib next month.
(4)Wendy H.
It's good but I would not go for Sunday brunch same prices and quality and service are not as good. A bit overpriced and the decor could be freshened up a bit all in all a step above outback
(3)Cheryl S.
Great steaks. .... melt in your mouth steaks. Saturday night, no reservations only 15 min wait. Waiter Jerry, the best I have ever had. Calls you by name, very attentive and great personality. We are from out of town, our family suggested this place and it was the best. Will be back for sure.
(5)Linda L.
We visited recently for our anniversary dinner on a Thursday evening. We were seated promptly at our reservation time. Our server Jennifer was very friendly. The bar however was slow and we didn't receive our cocktails until we were well into our salad. The server was apologetic for this. My steak oscar consisted of a 7 oz filet covered with blue crab meat and bernaisse sauce. The filet was cooked perfectly but I did not care for the crab meat as it was mixed into the sauce and then clopped over the filet. I would have preferred a bit of king or queen crab instead with a spear or two of asparagus with the sauce underlying the filet or served to the side. The blue crab seemed mushy in the manner it was served and I scraped most of it off. My baked potato came covered in sour cream and butter which luckily I liked but this was assumed by the kitchen as it was not requested by me. My husband's steak was cooked to perfection and he received a healthy side of mashed potatoes. The only drawback is the server forgot to bring his requested additional side of broccoli and he was well into the meal before this item arrived at the table. We felt the server seemed a bit stressed and not quite as attentive as she could have been as the restaurant was crowded and she seemed to be spread thin. Her friendliness however made up for the deficiency. Overall it was a good experience and we will definitely return. I only hope they will add more servers to accommodate the summer crowds.
(4)Steve B.
Sit at the bar for an interesting evening of entertaining conversation and good steaks!
(5)Maria D.
Food was good/ok...service was phenomenal...not sure if we will go back because there are better tasting places that aren't as expensive. Honestly nothing was "wrong" but there was also nothing "amazing".
(3)Robert G.
Had I never eaten a steak at Jocko's in Nipomo CA, I would have given this place five stars. The welcome from Ed, the maitre'd, was exceptional. No airs about Ed like the faux sophistication you get in many Las Vegas restaurants; You know, the boy who was raised in Jersey now speaking with a tinge of a British accent. The waiter, Jerry, was one of the best. The meal was excellent and the desert tray something you do not want to see if you're watching the calories. It will overcome any inclination you have to skip dessert. I have only one complaint...Just one: the "baked" potato was wrapped in foil. When you wrap a potato in foil you do not get a backed potato, rather a steamed one which does not have the dry, fluffy inside wrapped by a crispy, toasty peel on the outside. This is such as easy problem to fix by simply leaving the foil off. I liked the atmosphere, but It's pretty boisterous and therefore probably not suitable for a romantic evening. All-in-all a great restaurant, but no other steak house compares to Jocko's.
(4)Clint C.
Great service at the bar and the food was pretty damn good. Ended up getting 6 raw oysters and 6 raw clams for an app. Then went with the 10oz. Filet with broccoli and sautéed onions/mushrooms.

Remember that time when the Millennium Falcon was attempting to escape an Imperial Star Destroyer through an asteroid field in the Hoth system but couldn't make the jump to hyperspace because the warp drive was malfunctioning? After some clever maneuvering they escaped by disguising the ship as garbage discharged by the Star Destroyer as it exited the system. Let me tell you, the Aberdeen Barn pulled the same fast one on me. Luckily I didn't have to report my failure to a Sith lord. Besides being right on the fringes between Norfolk and Va Beach (you are so still in Norfolk, rebel scum) it's also located on US13 which leads to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. So there are quite a few truck stops on that same stretch. This place wasn't even on my radar, and I have been down Northampton once or twice or several hundred times. It looks like it's an all you can eat rib-house from the exterior, it's named a 'Barn' and it's nestled in this truck stop port. It was just another building floating by as I prepared my ship for the jump to the interstate. So K took me here a couple weeks ago after wading through my skepticism 'really?.. okay...' and we arrived to a full parking lot despite it being a week night. When we walked inside I realized my preconceptions were wrong, so wrong. The place was like a jump back to the 1950s where the interior is kind of dark and cozy. Another review identified it like an 'old Vegas' steakhouse and I would agree. It definitely had the feeling of a place where a smuggler would accept a job to transport a couple humans and a pair of droids to Alderran while evading a debt to a crime boss. The well dressed wait staff almost equaled the number of customers and they were all super courteous. I felt a little under dressed in my jeans and a polo, but there was a couple in shorts and a t-shirt so I didn't worry. They sat us at a corner table set for 5 despite it being just the two of us, it wasn't a slow night either. I thought that was really cool. The guy who sat us checked on us at least 3 times during our stay. There was even live music. What can I say about the food. It was great. I had the stuffed flounder and K had stuffed shrimp. We both couldn't finish our meals after enjoying a cup of she crab soup and bread. I figured this was a place that would have proper sweet tea, and I wasn't wrong. With the relaxing environment, a full stomach of rich seafood and the exceptional service, our experience at what I'm calling the Aberdeen Cantina from now on had me completely satisfied and humbled. Would I like to see the dessert tray? Pfft! did Solo shoot first? yes. yes he did.
(4)Naty G.
Service was excellent! Went there with about 15 people for my husbands graduation at the JFSC on Thursday nite...we all had different things and all delicious! The manager was super attentive and the live music made for a great atmosphere all around... between us we ordered The She crab soup, the oysters, the warm loaf of bread, the steaks...the desserts...all great.. I wouldve given them five stars if my husbands medium well new york steak hadn't been a bit dry...The wines selection and mixed drinks varieties gave us all great options... Old world decor and although they dont mind kids and even made hotdogs for the kids in our group, i wouldnt personally bring my children because it seems more conducive for a romantic dinner than for a family with small children...If we are ever in the area we would definitely go back...

Just came back from having dinner at Aberdeen's and it was EXCELLENT. The service was amazing, our server's name was Hassan and he gave great recommendations as well as explaining to us how the menu was laid out. We had the onion layers and crab bites for appetizers. I'm not an onion person but the bf seemed to really enjoy it. He had the Cowboy cut steak and he devoured it, I had a small bite, it was seasoned very well. I had the 10oz prime rib, delicious!!!!!!! I'm sad I didn't get to finish it because I'm not feeling that well but I brought it back to the hotel. Who eats prime rib in the hotel?? I guess I will. As far was people saying it was overpriced, I'm going to have to disagree. Maybe pricey for VA but coming from NYC this was really affordable. The service, quantity and quality of the food was top notch.
(5)T D.
Overall, though pricey, Aberdeen is a great restaurant. The service is great and the food is tasty. If you are tight on money, I recommend ordering one of their larger steaks and splitting it. If you want a good steak, I recommend you check out Aberdeen. Appetizer: Bacon Wrapped Scallops are tasty, but be sure to make use of the accompanied chili sauce. Entree: Prime Rib is very good. The rice pilaf is a nice side dish.

Mother's Day, and my wife asked for a lobster dinner at Aberdeen Barn. I called yesterday and made a reservation for this evening. We arrived five minutes early and still waited ten minutes in the lobby. I asked why the wait? They say that a lot of people canceled and blah, blah. What does that have to do with us? So after about twenty minutes we are seated. Then we're told that tonight is buffet only, but "everything on the menu is on the buffet". We order a couple drinks and hit the buffet. It's shoulder-to-shoulder in there. They have your basic salad stuff there, and a bunch of low-grade sides like mashed potato, mac and cheese, stuffing, mixed veggies. shrimp cocktail, crab cakes, turkey, ham, prime rib, soup... Very disappointed! at $40 per plate the food was no better than Golden Corral. Had to ask for the drinks again, had to ask for water refills. Then the cherry on top. The waitress hand writes on the check a 18% gratuity. Unbelievable. I mean a $20 tip for water refills at a buffet? I appreciate and reward good dinner service but no way at a buffet. we left a few bucks. She says that's how it is on holidays. My critique would be to STAY AWAY from this restaurant on holidays. Actually, this experience will keep me away from Aberdeen Barn for a while. The principal for me is that the person who took my reservation on Saturday should have told me it was buffet-only on Mother's Day, and that 18% tip write-in really torqued my jaw. By the time we waited for our "reserved" table it was the path of least resistance to just grin and bear it. We both agreed that we should have gone to Ruth's Chris.
(2)Ben H.
Great dining experience. The service was awesome. I had the prime rib, it was very good. Just a tad below Cagney's in Myrtle Beach.
(5)Kerri G.
Service was great, food was good.
(4)Isaac H.
My idea of a perfect dining experience. Good food and lots of it. Attentive helpful wait staff. Good friends. And decorated with a gangster flair. Not gangster like a hologram of Tupac, gangster like pictures of race horses and jockeys. Gangster like an old man playing the godfather theme on an acoustic guitar while you dine. I ordered the 22oz prime rib rare, dead cow walking. Side of mashed potatoes was tasty but secondary to the succulent buttery spiced meat. The maitre d reminded me of Don Rickles in the movie Casino. Classy but has probably broken some knee caps in his heyday. Btw this is purely speculation on my part about the maitre d. I had to burp a few times to make room for dessert. Worth every burp to fit in sweet orange 50/50 bar cake. In summation, eat here!
(5)Dennis D.
Service was great. The food was marginal at best. As a former restaurant owner I may be a little more critical than most. I don't mind spending top dollar for great food but I also expect great food at these prices.
(2)Maricris K.
Excellent food & wonderful service!! Don't let the outside fool you- it is very nice inside, kinda like "old vegas" type of steakhouse. The wait staff are in suits and bowties and they treat everybody exceptionally no matter how they're dressed. A great place for special occassions .
(5)Dennis C.
A friend of mine had been nagging me to take her here for months, and I finally did so last Sunday for lunch. We wound up arguing over the quality of our experience. We have entirely different tastes. She describes herself as a meat and potatoes connoisseur, which I am not. She can eat steak every day. I enjoy a good steak now and then, but only about once a year. I had a bit of an attitude during our visit. So, I will try to be as fair and objective as possible without sounding too much like a grumpy old man. The air-conditioning was set to a temperature that chilled me to the bone. The interior struck me as cavernous, both dark and depressing with outdated decor. The arc shaped booth seats were cramped and uncomfortable. My friend was too excited about getting her steak on to notice any of this. Our table was presented with a large basket of plastic wrapped Lance bread sticks, accompanied by a dip that tasted like congealed Cheese Whiz. Another basket was filled with plastic Land O' Lakes butter packets which you had to peel open. All of this struck me as very tacky, and even my friend agreed with me on this point. A small loaf of hot white bread was brought to our table. My friend commented: "Hot from the oven and easily sliced into individual pieces. It had a slightly crusty exterior which formed a nice contrast with its soft interior." Maybe so, but it delivered very little flavor for me. I was in no mood for a steak, so I ordered the following: STERLING SILVER BACON CHEESEBURGER: "Half pound of Sterling Silve ground beef, topped with lettuce, tomato, red onion, and mayonnaise on a toasted Costanzo roll." I ordered it medium-rare without the cheese and mayonnaise. It was cooked accordingly with no complaints. Due to an obvious misunderstanding, the lettuce, tomato, and onion were left off as well. But I was in no mood to prolong my agony and complain. The bacon slices were completely inedbile to me, greasy and limp as wet rags. After taking one bite, I lost my appetite and was only able to eat about a third of my burger. Steak fries were also included, and I only ate a few of them. My friend enjoyed them much more and commented: "Hot, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Nothing else was needed." I would have preferred a crispier interior and a little more seasoning. This was the most overpriced burger I've ever had with its price tag of $14.90. Even the five dollar burger I recently had at the Red Dog Saloon was a much better value and tasted better as well. My Rating: 2 Stars. GHOST PEPPER MAC-N-CHEESE: This was one of the lunch specials I saw posted in the lobby as we were led to our seats. As a hot pepper aficionado, I ordered this just to sample a few bites. Served in a small cast iron pan, I must concede that it was decent. My friend shared it with me and commented: "The pasta was cooked perfectly, and the cheddar cheese had a pleasing thick and gooey texture. I enjoyed the hint of smokiness in the background. But it was a bit too hot for me." But the heat level was okay with me. Our Mutual Rating: 4 Stars. My friend ordered the following: NEW YORK STRIP (12 OZ) It came with a small house salad, and she chose broccoli and a baked potato for her sides. She ordered it medium and had the following comments: "It was cooked to a perfectly medium temperature and was well seasoned, tender, and juicy with a smoky char-grilled flavor on its surface. The baked potato was light, fluffy, and freshly baked. The broccoli was nicely cooked with.slightly firm texture." She passed on the house salad, which I ate instead. It was extremely small, consisting only of a few tiny pieces of uninspiring lettuce and cherry tomatoes. In order to save room for dessert, she only ate about a third of her steak. She had the rest boxed up to take home, along with the remains of my burger and greasy bacon. Her Rating: 4.5 Stars. THE TUXEDO: This was her selection from the dessert tray, a semi-spherical dome shaped mound of chocolate mousse. Her comments: "It was the star of my meal. The chocolate was divine with a delicate, moist, and velvety texture." I had a couple of bites and have had much better elsewhere. I'm giving her this one. Her Rating: 5 Stars. Our server was attentive and kept our glasses filled with our water and tea. The background CD music included songs from the Bee Gees, Elton John, Gladys Knight, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, and the O'Jays. The music made her want to dance, but it wasn't for me. I'm more of a Frank Sinatra and piano music kind of guy. Overall, this place didn't work for me. My friend was upset when I told her I was going to write a 2-star review, as she wanted a 4-star review instead. So we compromised. I can't believe I gave in to this. As a further consolation, I told her I would take her to Ruth's Chris in the near future, where I once had a much better experience. We're okay now, but she made out like a bandit on this one.

Decent to above average steaks and prime ribs at a premium price. My prime rib was well flavored and seasoned and would have been excellent at $10 cheaper. For the price point I had slightly higher expectations. Sides were very good and service was perfect even for a party or 7. All steaks were about I grade further cooked than expected although I'm not sure if this was de to the size of our party or the way they prepare steaks. Although after hearing the servers description of medium rare to a party member I ordered my steak rare and got what I would typically expect to be a medium rare steak. TL;DR: good steaks, excellent sides, perfect service if a little overpriced. (Slightly lower price point easily makes this a 4 star rating)

While in town for a few days, we drove past Aberdeen looking for dinner. We never heard of it but a full parking lot seemed like a good sign. It also looked like a non-stuffy steakhouse. Hey, it's a barn! The dirty martini hit the spot. A solo musician played throughout the evening. Our young waiter was super friendly and walked us and through the fairly complex menu. The 12 for $12 east coast oysters were just ok and one was bad so it was 11 for $12. The house salad was pretty big and I was still eating it when my steak arrived. Aberdeen only buys Sterling Silver Premium Beef from Colorado. I REALLY wanted the phenomenal 30 oz, French chopped Grilled Tomahawk Ribeye, but skipped it thanks to my budget and stomach. My 35-day aged, 18 oz bone-in Cowboy Delmonico Ribeye steak was expertly cooked to medium rare. So tender and flavorful! We were so full we skipped dessert, but try to leave room for it. The choices looked huge and calorie-busting. If I had to choose one restaurant in Virginia Beach to visit again, Aberdeen Barn would probably be it.

Honestly I think the best steak house around. It's pricey but it's really good quality and definitely worth every dollar. The staff was wonderful, dirty martinis perfect..... The decor is a little dated but I think that's why I like it even more lol. I loved everything about this place. Just wish it was closer to my house

This was the worse decision I made... I had some hesitation walking in.. But I said lets how it a try.. First the have these, wrapped in plastic, "bread sticks" and "spreadable" cheese on the table.. Which for a place that declares to be top grade.. Looks CHEAP. Kind of let those grade school snacks. Then our salad came... I ordered a Greek salad, it had so much dressing I couldn't finish it and the lettuce did not taste or look fresh, but I guess that's why they put so much dressing to cover it up. Then our main meal arrived a DELMONICO more like a gray looking bad piece of meat... It tasted like a porterhouse more than a ribeye... Both my wife and I ate the same meal. The guy who sat us came by to see how everything was and my wife told him and the waitress that the meat wasn't good nor did it taste good... Multiple time.. The guy offered to make another one but we didn't think it was worth it. By the time we got to our hotel.. We were feeling sick to our stomachs... We feel like we got food poisoning. AVOID THIS PLACE!!

Steak was tough, oysters were the size of a quarter. For $50 bucks, a ribeye ought to be tender and not have veins of gristle running through it.

The food is always and has always tasted amazing, but lately if I'm here for a date night, this is all we end up doing. For starters, the service has gotten slower than normal when I have been here the past few times. Sometimes I think my server forgets about us, okay there's only two of us at the table but can we get decent service? I've gotten to the point where I have to order my appetizer, drinks, and meal all at the same time because I'm afraid I'm never going to see my server for a long period of time. Luckily, after i've been doing that we get our meals about 15-20mins apart from each other. I don't think I should go out to a restaurant and still be here 2.5hours later! BTW, this place can be REALLY noisy Friday-Saturday nights. I'm not talking about the musician that plays either, the vibe of the people in the restaurant can be a little crazy. Some people don't know what "inside voice" means. You're sitting so close to one another that you hear their entire conversation. I don't think I should yell over my table to talk to the person right in front of me. Like I said, food is good, service is slow, and ambience is loud.

This place is amazing. If you want Ruth' Chris quality food, at way lower prices. This place will have you saying what is Ruth what. Their desserts are great, their seafood is great, their meat is great. Atmosphere is good, and they added more parking. This is our celebrating spot. So good and great prices. Ribeyes, oyster, cheescake, mmmmmmmmm.

The environment is very cozy and friendly! I sat at the bar &was immediately greeted by everyone who had been already dining there. I got invitations to join their tables and shared many jokes with people near the bar. The hospitality and staff were great! I had mussels for an appetizer that were amazing and the delmonico steak and mashed potatoes with salad&bread. The food was more than enough for my appetite. Although it's pretty pricey the experience was one I would enjoy again.

My wife and I dropped a 100 dollar bill on a this place for dinner tonight. Some of the more extravagant amenities presented at our table were "Lance" breadsticks, aerosol Cheez Whiz sprayed into a cup and chilled to dip the bread stick cracker things in, and a nice fancy bendy straw in my drink. We also had a nice table cloth protected by a heavy glass top. The aroma was a glade plugin positioned at head height next to our table probably being used to mask the fresh rotten flowers in the corner behind our table. The steaks were mediocre at best and the sautéed mushrooms were soaked in oil and then oven burnt before being brought to our table. The mashed potatoes were just that.... Nothing more and certainly nothing to rave about. The wait staff was friendly and prompt. There was a guy I can only assume was a floor manager who looked quite disheveled in an ill fitting sports jacket with a super sweet mullet that must have stopped and thanked us for our patronage at least 3 times. The man playing guitar was very good however after listening to the chords I realized he was playing "Metallica" Enter Sandman and Johnny Cash "Ring of Fire". Overall, the barn look on the outside made me feel as if I were going into a Texas style steak house only to be greeted by a very dated nautical feeling dingy lit restaurant. For the same amount of food, with better taste, we could have gone to a chain steakhouse and spent half the money as we did tonight. We do not recommend this restaurant.

Ugh. No thanks. My friend who used to live here loves this place and wants to eat here every time she comes to town to visit (2-3 times per year). I suppose my standards for food have gotten much higher in the last few months as I've discovered a few new places that have mostly local and fresh ingredients in their food and over the last two years I have completely adjusted my eating habits. When you eat clean, you notice foods that aren't far more easily. You can just taste it. And buddy I tasted it last night. Last night we met my friend for dinner because she was in town and wanted to eat here - it won't be happening again - at least not with me - because our meal was $100 for two people. The majority of my diet now is veggies and this place has some sides like rice, broccoli, mushrooms, sautéed onions, etc. But they don't have much for people who don't eat meat, fish, or chicken. (Now, before you stone me because it's a steakhouse and I fully recognize that - some people get dragged to places they don't want to go to with family and friends - and most nice places will usually offer at least one or two meals that could satisfy a person without a lot of meat in their diet). They don't have any dinner salads or anything like this. No biggie - I went with my usual - the stuffed broiled grouper with a side of rice, broccoli and sautéed mushrooms. My grouper had crab meat and a lemon butter topping. When my food came out - a HUGE portion more than any human should ever try to consume in one sitting (but that's fine bc the plate is $28.00) - it seemed ok. But, the fish was really greasy and oily, like, almost falling apart to the point where I couldn't keep it on the fork. Gross. I ate about half of it because I was starving to death, but it wasn't great. I will probably never order it again - it's a high-priced dish and it was prepared sub-par. I've had fish cooked properly in places such as Seattle, WA and this was not how white fish should taste or be prepared broiled or not. Also - my broccoli wasn't cooked all the way and was almost raw. I ate it anyway - because I eat tons of veggies and, like I said, I was starving by this point. But it certainly wasn't prepared right. While I'm on it - the side salad that came before my entree wasn't very good either. It's your standard side salad but it's just blah. The dressing is clearly some store-bought stuff, it's not fresh (I make my own at home and this stuff wasn't dark like balsamic should be - it was a very muted light brown color) and the sad little tomato and cucumber pieces on the not at all fresh lettuce was just gross. No spice to it. Nothing to set this salad apart or tease your taste buds - just blah. The warm bread was good - no complaints there. My boyfriend ordered a cheese pasta dish and he was served a huuuggeeeee plate/bowl overflowing with pasta - it was legit enough to feed all four of us and probably still have something left over. I took a small bite and it was not good. It tasted like it was from a can of Spaghetti O's. I bet if I walked into that kitchen I'd see them pouring this sauce from a bottle and heating it up. That's awful. The noodles were swimming in the sauce and almost looked like soup and it had a ton of melted cheese in it. My friend ordered the steak and, as this is a steak house, they do this well. Hers looked good if you are into steak that's pink - which is how she ordered it - I'm not so I can't commend on that. For dessert my boyfriend ordered the Florida Sunshine or Dreamsicle cake he loves to get here and I decided to try the lemon. Our other friend ordered the seasonal pumpkin cheesecake. I tried her cake - it was very very very good. I am a fan of all things pumpkin during October so I've had my fair share of pumpkin cheesecakes and I do have to say that this one was one of the best. Also, my lemon cake was really good, light and yummy. Dessert was by far the best part of the meal. The employees were friendly and all said hello and good night when we left, we sat for a few hours (they weren't busy - in fact - it was dead with like two other tables) and talked with our friend and no one really bothered us so that was nice, but for the price, and the food, it just didn't do it for me. I see this place as someplace that was good several years or decades ago that is a fading star, hanging on because they have some die-hard people who like to come eat here, but I won't be one of them. It's too expensive for the non-fresh menu items I'm getting and the sub-par food.

I would give this place 3.5 stars if I could. I rounded it up because it was very tasty. The service was good also. Everyone greeted us on the way in and out. It was just the atmosphere that was lacking for me. If you told me this place was built in the 70s-80s time frame and never updated, I would believe it. For the prices, I just expected a better overall experience.
